Travel and horses
The travel map, what a horse or cart changes about moving, and what the transport items cost.
Getting around
Open the travel map with V and pick a destination. The first-hours advice for getting to Daggerfall city is on Your first hours.
Horses and carts
A horse and a cart are inventory items. If you carry one, you can ride it.
- , mounts or dismounts. If you own both, you always mount the horse; the cart is the fallback.
- . summons your horse.
- Riding is faster: a horse’s base speed is your walking speed plus 225, a cart’s plus 100 (classic speed units). The built-in Enhanced Riding option (on by default) also allows galloping.
- The Running skill does not train while you are mounted.
- You cannot climb from the saddle, and you cannot crouch while riding.
- Entering a building or a dungeon dismounts you. Leaving does not remount you; you walk out on foot.
Fast travel
Two built-in mods shape how you travel, both on by default:
- Travel Options lets you choose, on the travel map, between the original fast travel and a journey you actually travel, sped up to sixty times, with a cautious option that avoids some encounters and stops if your health or fatigue gets low. Ship travel is possible only from ports.
- Immersive Travel puts carriage drivers outside the gates of the walled cities: talk to one and pay the fare to fast travel to a city, hamlet or village. Hiring a ship costs 15 a day to rent and 10 a day for a captain, and ships in small docks only reach ports in the same region. Online its rules are the same for everyone.
Horse Cart and Cargo
By default this mod keeps your horse and cart in the world rather than in your pack:
- They stay where you leave them and can follow you or wait on command. A following horse keeps about 3 metres behind you and avoids fights, and it fast travels with you.
- Your wagon can be used to reach a building or dungeon entrance when it is parked within 50 metres of it.
- Its own hotkeys are 5 to quick mount or dismount your last horse or wagon and 6 to summon your horse and wagon to a nearby spot outdoors.
- A trailing wagon is drawn behind you while you ride in cart mode.
What transport costs
Base prices from the item database, before any shop adjustment. These are the prices with Roleplay & Realism: Items, which is on by default; classic Daggerfall has the cart at 150 and the horse at 1,000.
| Item | Base price |
|---|---|
| Small Cart | 1,000 |
| 3,000 | |
| Rowboat | 300 |
| Large Boat | 20,000 |
| Small Ship | 400,000 |
| Large Galley | 1,500,000 |
The bank sells ships at its own prices; see Banking, loans and letters of credit.
