Artifacts
The daedric and legendary items, which ones have special code, and what that code does.
Artifacts are the items in the game’s MAGIC.DEF file marked as artifacts. All of them, with their enchantments, are in the magic items and artifacts database.
Most artifacts carry only ordinary enchantments, such as spells cast when used or when struck. Ten are named in the game’s artifact code, and nine of them have effect code behind a “special artifact effect” enchantment; the tenth, the Ring of Hircine, is read directly by the lycanthropy rules. The game picks the effect from the enchantment’s parameter, which is the artifact’s number.
The ten in the artifact code
| # | Artifact | How it fires |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Masque of Clavicus | Worn; works every round. It raises all eleven social groups. |
| 1 | Mehrunes’ Razor | On a strike. |
| 2 | Mace of Molag Bal | On a strike. Drains the target’s Strength like an ordinary Drain Strength spell. The mace’s strikes decay after 12 game minutes. |
| 3 | Ring of Hircine | No effect code of its own. Lycanthropy checks whether you wear it. |
| 4 | Sanguine Rose | Used. Summons an ally monster. |
| 5 | Oghma Infinium | Used. Opens the character sheet with a fixed bonus pool of 30 points. |
| 6 | Wabbajack | On a strike. Changes the target into another creature from a table of seventeen careers. |
| 7 | Ring of Namira | When an enemy damages you. Reflects the damage back by the attacker’s team: animals take none, Daedra half, undead double, everyone else the full amount. |
| 8 | Skull of Corruption | Used. Summons an ally monster. |
| 9 | Azura’s Star | Used. With the Star equipped, every monster you kill has its soul taken, no Soul Trap needed. Using it releases a soul. |
The two summoning items use a range of 12 units (the game says “There are no monsters nearby.” when it finds none) and a durability cost of 100.
