Guilds overview
The four main guilds, how rank works, who invites you and what the temples and knightly orders are.
Four guilds are one organisation each: the Fighters Guild, the Mages Guild, the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood. All four, with their skills and ten rank titles, are in the guild database.
Getting in
- Fighters Guild and Mages Guild: you apply, and they check your reputation and your skills in the guild’s own skill list.
- Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood: invitation only. You do not apply. See Joining the Thieves Guild for what the Thieves Guild counts.
Rank
There are ten ranks. Each needs reputation with the guild: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 for ranks 1 to 10. Reputation runs from -100 to +100. A rank also needs enough skill in the guild’s skills, and rank can change at most once every 28 days.
| Guild | Rank titles |
|---|---|
| Fighters | Apprentice, Journeyman, Swordsman, Protector, Defender, Warder, Guardian, Champion, Warrior, Master |
| Mages | Apprentice, Journeyman, Evoker, Conjurer, Magician, Enchanter, Warlock, Wizard, Master Wizard, Archmage |
| Thieves | Apprentice, Journeyman, Filcher, Crook, Robber, Bandit, Thief, Ringleader, Mastermind, Master Thief |
| Dark Brotherhood | Apprentice, Journeyman, Operator, Slayer, Executioner, Punisher, Terminator, Assassin (Dark Sister for women), Dark Brother, Master Assassin |
A member who falls on probation is expelled only below -10 reputation. In classic Daggerfall the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood never expel members, but by default the underworld guilds can expel you for poor performance, and leaving one sends a squad after you (Roleplay & Realism). Joining the Thieves Guild floors your reputation at 2, a buffer of one failed quest.
Skills each guild looks at
- Fighters: Archery, Axe, Blunt Weapon, Giantish, Hand-to-Hand, Long Blade, Orcish, Short Blade. (Hand-to-Hand is an addition in this game, so a fist fighter can join.)
- Mages: Alteration, Destruction, Illusion, Mysticism, Restoration, Thaumaturgy.
- Thieves: Backstabbing, Climbing, Lockpicking, Pickpocket, Short Blade, Stealth, Streetwise.
- Dark Brotherhood: Archery, Backstabbing, Climbing, Critical Strike, Daedric, Destruction, Short Blade, Stealth, Streetwise.
Training
Training costs 100 gold for members and 400 for non-members. The standard training maximum is 50.
Temples and knightly orders
Eight divine temples (Akatosh, Arkay, Dibella, Julianos, Kynareth, Mara, Stendarr, Zenithar) and ten knightly orders (Horn, Dragon, Flame, Hawk, Owl, Rose, Wheel, Candle, Raven, Scarab) are tracked as factions. Look them up in Factions; the Thieves Guild is faction 42, the Dark Brotherhood 108.
