Foraging tools
The six foraging tools, where each can be used, what it finds and what the finds are worth.
The built-in Foraging mod, on by default, adds six tools that turn the wild into supplies. They are items you carry and use. See Items under Foraging for the prices and weights.
| Tool | What it does | What decides the haul |
|---|---|---|
| Wood-Axe | Chops 0 to 4 wood bundles | Intelligence and Strength; it is meaner in the desert |
| Pick-Axe | Starts a mining quest, a harder one the better you are | Intelligence and Agility |
| Sickle | Starts a plant-gathering quest for your climate and the time of year: arid, winter or summer plants | The climate and the month |
| Fishing-Net | Casts for 0 to 4 fish | Intelligence and Agility |
| Spade | Digs up a grave in a cemetery, a harder quest the better you are | Intelligence and Endurance |
| Basket | Finds 0 to 4 pieces of food: apples, oranges, mushrooms or eggs, depending on climate and season | Intelligence |
Where you can use them
Every tool refuses to work in the same few cases, each with its own message:
- Inside a building or a dungeon.
- In a settlement.
- Without daylight, except the Spade.
- With enemies nearby.
- When you are fully encumbered.
Beyond that, the Fishing-Net needs you to be in water or on the ocean, the Spade needs a cemetery, and the Wood-Axe, Pick-Axe, Sickle and Basket will not work out at sea.
Eating what you find
With the survival rules on, the apples, oranges and fish you find are the survival versions instead; see Food and cooking. Online, the Basket’s food is rolled with these same tables, and the gathering professions are described on Crafting and professions.
