Banking, loans and letters of credit
Where your gold is safe, what a loan really costs, and the fee on a letter of credit.
Accounts
Offline, the bank keeps one account per region, sixty-two in all. Gold banked in one region cannot be withdrawn in another.
Online, there is one account for everyone’s branch: the Empire’s. Gold paid in at any branch is drawn at any branch, and every deed, sale and wallet pays from it and into it.
Withdrawing
The bank refuses a withdrawal if the gold would make you too heavy to carry. The weight check is the same one a shop uses when you leave with a letter of credit.
Letters of credit
A letter of credit costs your account the amount plus 1%, but the letter itself is worth only the amount. The 1% is the bank’s. The minimum is 100 gold.
Loans
- The cap is 10,000 gold per level by default (Roleplay & Realism sets it; classic Daggerfall allows 50,000). Online, the Empire lends a tenth of whatever the cap is, so 1,000 gold per level.
- The minimum loan is 100.
- The loan is repaid within one year of game time.
- You owe the amount plus 10% from the moment you borrow. There is no accruing interest, so repaying early saves nothing.
- You get reminders at 6, 3 and 1 months before the due date.
- A loan stays with the region that made it: its due date, its default and the reputation a default costs are that region’s, even though the gold itself is the Empire’s account online.
Ships and houses
The bank also sells ships (a small one for 100,000 gold, a large one for 200,000) and lists houses for sale, at most 20 at a time.
If you are going somewhere dangerous, bank the gold first. See the Wild Zone for what death costs.
